I also think that in some ways that is its greatest weakness, the consumer, and using popularity as a judgment on whether something is news worthy. Lets face it, the modern consumer is an easily bored beast with the attention span of a goldfish, so what happens to those news items that may be important, but to the voting Digg subscriber, are ............ boring. What one person may find newsworthy, another may find totally useless and uninteresting.
For example, what if you lived in a rural area and there was a government announcement that rural hospital services were being cut back. For a start, Digg is a global orientated site, so if you lived in outback NSW and you posted an article on budget cuts to rural hospital services, it would sink like a lead X-ray apron because
a. 99.99% of Digg viewers would find it irrelevant.
b. Despite being important, its boring news.
c. Vast majority of Digg contributors are American.
Looking further, lets see what the number 1 article for World and Business is.
The Best Daily Show Episode Ever?
Yeah, well, thats important ................... NOT.I know what the Daily Show is, its a great show (American), but is it newsworthy and why is it under the heading of "World and Business"??????
Hmmmm, okay, lets check out News, should be something more meaty there.
Harry Potter Wants to Wear a Dress?
Well, thats certainly news to me, but I was hoping to find out about more, ummmm newsworthy stories. So, bottomline, if you want predominantly light weight, consumer driven infotainment news, check out Digg. Oh, I forgot to add, American orientated.
