Sketchup is a free drawing program like CAD 3D, except it is much more user friendly and FREE. It was designed from the ground up to be used by ordinary people who don't have an engineering degree.
I started using it in conjunction with a MMPOG (Massive Mulitplayer Online Game) I play called Chosen Space, where players were asked to contribute ship design images based on a basic shape supplied by the game designer.
These are some of the ship designs that won me equal 1st place.

You say 'encouraged' like it's ominous! The google focus comes from a practical pov only..we wanted to minimise the number of user accounts needed to complete all the things. We also provided alternate tools to use in case people strongly objected.
